Donald Trump lijkt de publicatie van Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House aan te willen grijpen om de vrijheid van meningsuiting in de VS in te perken. Tijdens een bijeenkomst met de Republikeinse partijtop in Camp David zei Trump dat Wolff zijn boek uitsluitend kon publiceren omdat de Amerikaanse smaadwetgeving te slap is. Hoog tijd daar iets aan te doen, suggereerde Trump.
In Fire and Fury wordt Trump afgeschilderd als een dementerende malloot met de intellectuele vermogens van een pinda. Volgens Wolff neemt niemand uit zijn omgeving – inclusief zijn eigen familie – Trump serieus. Iedereen ziet – in navolging van Trump zelf – het presidentschap van The Donald als een kans zichzelf te verrijken, voor de rest niks.
Na de publicatie van Fire and Fury afgelopen vrijdag, sloegen alle stoppen door bij The Donald. In een serie al even demente als hilarische tweets betitelde Trump zichzelf als “een stabiel genie” en prees hij zijn eigen intelligentie:

Reagan werd – jaren na zijn presidentschap – gediagnosticeerd met Alzheimer. Tijdens zijn tweede termijn circuleerden er echter al geruchten dat zijn geheugen hem regelmatig in de steek liet en hij steeds meer moeite had enigszins gecompliceerde redeneringen te volgen.
Het probleem is natuurlijk dat Trump een dementerende clown met fascistische trekjes is, die over veel macht beschikt. De conservatieve columnist John Podhoretz wees er gisteren op dat lachen om een dementerende narcist op de positie van president van de VS misschien niet de slimste reactie is:
