Bluesklassieker du jour: Another Man Done Gone

Een 19e-eeuwse folksong, waarschijnlijk geschreven kort na de Burgeroorlog (1861-1865). Officieel was de slavernij afgeschaft, maar in de praktijk maakte dat voor veel zwarte mensen weinig verschil: “Repression of African Americans didn’t stop at the end of the Civil War, and prisons and chain gangs were full of black people arrested for minor violations. This song, “Another Man Done Gone”, tells of the death of a man on one of those chain gangs”.

De song is vooral bekend geworden door Johnny Cash, maar de versie van Odetta is mooier – met alle respect voor The Man In Black.

Another man done gone
Another man done gone
Another man done gone from the county farm
Another man done gone

I didn’t know his name
I didn’t know his name
I didn’t know his name, didn’t know his name
Didn’t know his name

He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on
He had a long chain on, had a long chain on
Had a long chain on

They killed another man
They killed another man
They killed another man, killed another man
Killed another man

Another man done gone
Another man done gone
Another man done gone from the county farm
Another man done gone
