“Transformer” is niet mijn favoriete album van Lou Reed, maar Lou’s beschrijving van de New Yorkse undergroundscene rond Andy Warhol eind jaren ’60 is een tijdloze klassieker. Hoe een song die openlijk over orale sex, prostitutie, travestieten en hard drugs spreekt ooit de censor heeft kunnen passeren, zal wel altijd een raadsel blijven.
De karakters Holly, Candy, Little Joe, Sugar Plum Fairy en Jackie waren echt bestaande figuren en Reed voert ze op onder de naam waaronder ze bekend stonden. Lou verwachtte dat ze woedend zouden zijn – hij is al even geestig als meedogenloos in zijn beschrijving van hun activiteiten – maar iedereen bleek beretrots te zijn op zijn/haar vermelding in de song.
