Beïnvloed door zowel Funkadelic, Lee Perry en The Clash als de Beats en de Situationisten, probeerde The Pop Group de energie van punk te combineren met de subversiviteit van Howl en The Revolution of Everyday Life. Meestal eindigen dergelijke experimenten in ondraaglijk pretentieus geneuzel, maar Mark Stewart en de zijnen beschikten over meer kwaliteiten dan de gemiddelde kunstacademiestudent. Helaas viel de groep al na drie singles en twee albums uiteen. Het debuutalbum Y is klassiek, evenals de singles She’s Beyond Good and Evil en We Are All Prostitutes.
