The Stranglers waren in ’77 een beetje een vreemde eend in de bijt. De band maakte gebruik van keyboards, toetsenist Dave Greenfield had – the horror – een SNOR en drummer Jet Black was in ’77 al bijna 40 jaar oud. Ook hun muzikale achtergrond wekte het nodige wantrouwen: Black kwam uit de jazzscene, gitarist Hugh Cornwell adoreerde de blues en basgitarist Jean Jacques Burnel was opgeleid tot klassiek gitarist. Bepaald geen aanbevelingen in een scene waarin enthousiasme van meer waarde werd geacht dan muzikale virtuositeit. De sektevorming zou echter pas later volgen: naast The Stranglers hoorden ook Talking Heads, DEVO en Blondie er destijds gewoon bij.
“Grip” is afkomstig van het magnifieke debuutalbum Rattus Norvegicus. Er zouden nog drie sterke (en succesvolle) albums volgen. Daarna werd het snel minder, al a zou de band in de jaren ’80 nog regelmatig een hit scoren.
