David Byrne’s visie op de Hemel als een plek waar dezelfde gebeurtenissen zich blijven herhalen – tot in eeuwigheid. De bar waar de band avond aan avond uitsluitend jouw favoriete song speelt, het tot in elk detail voorspelbare feest, de kus van de geliefde die eindeloos herhaalt wordt: “When this kiss is over, it will start again/It will not be any different, it will be exactly the same“. Op zo’n plek verliezen zelfs de mooiste ervaringen hun bekoring. De kus van de geliefde verliest haar betekenis, het feest wordt een nachtmerrie en de favoriete song dodelijk saai. Ervaringen ontlenen hun waarde aan hun uniekheid en hun onvoorspelbaarheid. In Byrne’s Hemel bestaan geen unieke ervaringen; het is een zich eeuwig herhalende cyclus van identieke gebeurtenissen. Byrne’s Hemel is eigenlijk de Hel.
De versie op “Stop Making Sense” is wonderschoon en laat de melodielijn schitterend uitkomen, maar ik heb toch een lichte voorkeur voor de originele versie. Nét iets atmosferischer.
