Dat Bob Dylan Smokey Robinson ooit ‘America’s greatest living poet’ noemde, is helaas een mythe. Dat bijna iedereen – waaronder ondergetekende – jarenlang heeft gedacht dat het citaat juist was, is op zich eigenlijk al een eerbetoon aan Smokey Robinson. Slechts weinigen kunnen liefdesverdriet zo poëtisch beschrijven als William Robinson, jr.
Robinson behoorde tot Barry Gordy’s oorspronkelijke stal bij Motown, waar hij tot eind jaren ’60 de belangrijkste songschrijver was. Na de komst van Norman Whitfield en Holland-Dozier-Holland raakte hij als songschrijver en producer wat op de achtergrond. Zijn latere werk is onevenwichtig, maar in de jaren ’60 schreef hij het ene pareltje na het andere. Dit is een van zijn mooiste.
