Op 14 augustus 1956 overleed Bertolt Brecht in Oost-Berlijn, de hoofdstad van de toenmalige DDR. Brecht’s status als één van de grootste toneelschrijvers en dichters van de twintigste eeuw is onomstreden. Dat geldt niet voor zijn politieke opvattingen: Brecht stond weliswaar niet kritiekloos tegenover het stalinisme, maar hij heeft er nooit voldoende afstand van genomen.
Desondanks: als toneelschrijver en dichter heeft hij zijn gelijke niet, althans niet in het Duitse taalgebied. Ernst Busch wordt algemeen gezien als de beste “interpretator” van Brecht, maar P. J. Harvey’s versie van Brecht’s “Das Lied vom Weib des Nazi-Soldaten” (Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife) stelt alle andere versies ver in de schaduw. Brecht schreef het gedicht in 1943, midden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, voor zijn toneelstuk Schweyk im Zweitem Weltkrieg, een vervolg op Jaroslav Hasek’s anti-oorlogsroman De Avonturen van de Brave Soldaat Svejk. De muziek is van Kurt Weill.
